Happy Summer Solstice Full Moon!

Yoga-445

There is so much magic and potential in the air right now as the second full moon in Sagittarius comes to it’s fullest peak on the summer solstice – a rare moment in time of sun and moon both at their fullest helping to illuminate our way.

The Solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year and so is a time for celebrating and welcoming in the light. We are at the peak of expansion where the solar energies are at their strongest and everything is flourishing and abundant – a day associated with power, fertility, happiness, energy, strength, courage, self-belief, light and hope.

With all these fiery solar energies in the air it makes perfect sense that this full moon is in the fiery sign of Sagittarius. A sign of adventure, optimism, faith, awareness and understanding this full moon is here at this mid point of the year to help us to see things very clearly. Sagittarius is motivated by enthusiasm and freedom and asks you to be brave and push your ideas, dreams and ideas to the max. Nothing can keep a Sagittarius down and this is a moon that is pushing you towards excitement and adventure, fulfilling your greatest potential and seeing life as an exciting adventure to be fully lived and loved.

Anything can be achieved under a Sagittarius full moon, especially when you have the power and energy of the solstice energy cheering you on. There could not be a better time to make real lasting changes and move forwards – the lunar energies helping you to let go of anything standing in your way of living a full and happy life and the solar energies perfectly balanced to help you to find the fire, courage and energy to move forwards into the second half of the year.

Adapted from my article for Yoga Magazine here are some ways to help you to fully tune into this magical portal, a real day of change…

Do a life review

The word solstice literally means stopping or standing still, from the Latin word solstitum – sol (sun) and stitum (to stop) – making it the ideal day to take some time to be still and check in with where you are at this midpoint of the year. This week make some time to acknowledge how far you have come this year. Notice the achievements you have made, any lessons learned and all of the blessings the first half of the year has already brought you. Notice too if you are still aligned with your goals for the year. Reinvigorate them if you need to and decide what it is that you want the second half of this year to bring. Call upon the powerful Sagittarius full moon energy to help you to let go of anything at all standing in your way.

Create a Solstice Mandala

Take a piece of paper and fold in half. On one side draw a circle representing your life as it is now. Where do you see yourself placed in this mandala of your life? What is consuming your life right now? Who else is in your circle? How do you spend your time, your energy? What is difficult in your life and what brings you joy. Then turn the paper over and draw another circle, which represents your life as you would like it to be. Place yourself at the centre of the circle and then fill the circle with everything you would like to have in your life. Dare to dream and dream big, really go for it! Now compare the circles. How do they compare and what do you need to do to move towards the life of your dreams?

Set some intentions

From your experience with the mandala set some intentions. What differed from your life as it is now and the life you want to live? What do you need to change to take you closer to your ideal life?

A Sankalpa is a sacred intention that comes from the heart. Create three sankalpas of steps you can take over the next three months which will take you closer to the life of your dreams. Feel that with this renewed energy surrounding you that anything is possible. Remember too that this time of year is all about celebrating summer, joy and happiness so make a ‘love to do’ list for this summer too, filled with all of the things you would love to do over the coming summer months.

Sagittarius is represented by the Centaur, half man, half horse with his bow and arrow perfectly poised to take aim and fire. Feel this same energy within you. Take aim towards where you want to be in the second half of this year and feel as though you are firing the arrows of your dreams and see them completely hitting the mark.

Start a gratitude journal

It is said that the quickest way to get what you want is to be grateful for what you already have, so begin a gratitude journal. At the end of each day write down three things the day has brought you that you are grateful for. You may also consider keeping the journal with you at all times and writing down all the amazing and wonderful things that happen day to day in your life. Remember there is no such thing as coincidence and the more you start to notice the magical synchronicities and signs that are given to you daily the more you can follow them and get into the flow of your life! As soon as you begin to be thankful for the magic and all the good things that surround you the more magic and good things will come to you!

Create an energy ball

The manaipura (or solar plexus) chakra is like our own personal inner sunshine. This is the centre of power, energy, will and achievement and is where all of our power to manifest comes from. Bring your palms together and rub them vigorously until you feel some heat. Then closing the eyes take the palms about shoulder distance apart with the palms facing each other. Begin to slowly bring the palms together and at some point you will begin to feel a little bit of resistance. Start to gently bounce the palms around this ball of energy feeling it take shape between your hands. You may wish to fill this energy ball with your intentions and desires. When you are ready place this glowing ball of energy into the Manipura chakra feeling this bright radiant sun at your centre being filled with even more light and energy and glowing even brighter. Feel as if you are now magnetic to all of your intentions, drawing them easily towards you. Feel this warm, bright light radiate through your whole body and out into the world.

A yoga practice to celebrate the summer solstice

Tap into the power of intention and empowerment that the solstice brings with the following sequence. The energy at the Summer Solstice is very yang, expansive, and outward looking and so during this period of growth it’s important to stay grounded and centred in your truth and intentions.

  • Begin in Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

Part of the gift of yoga is having the courage and honesty to see things as they really are. How things actually are is your starting point. It is from this very real place, with firm foundations, rooted in reality, that change is possible. So close your eyes, bring your palms together in front of your heart and focus into your breath. Each time you inhale imagine that you are drawing warm fertile energy from deep down in the earth up through your feet. As you exhale feel this energy filling your entire body so you feel fully connected to the earth and your own centre.

  • Surya Namaskara (sun salutations)

There could not be a more perfect way to connect with the solar energies surrounding you than with sun salutations, literally honouring the sun. You may want to get up at sunrise on the morning of the solstice, face east and do anywhere from 3-108 rounds of sun salutations. If that seems too much even one reverent bow to the sun will be enough! As you go through your sun salutations feel that you are moving and flowing with the creative energy of life. Keep in your mind’s eye an image of the sun and feel the warm glow and the power the sun brings with it. Aim to make this honouring a daily habit from now on to bring even more sunshine into your life.

  • Trikonasana (triangle pose)

Trikonasana is at once stabilising and freeing, so it helps you to feel grounded and connected to yourself and the earth, yet at the same time expansive and as if you can reach out and take hold of all your dreams and desires. Imagine a radiant sun at your centre brightening and expanding each time you inhale. As you exhale imagine these warm rays radiating through your body as you expand your energy and shine your inner light and sunshine out into the world.

  • Virabhadrasana 2 (warrior two)

Find the summer warrior within as your practice this strong, grounding and uplifting pose. Warrior two reminds us that we have the inner strength, courage and determination to achieve every one of our dreams and intentions. As you stand firmly rooted in the present moment gaze forwards towards your future and feel as if you are sending all of your focussed intention and energy towards the summer of your dreams. Believe in yourself and your power as you feel yourself grow into the greatest version of yourself you can be.

  • Supta Baddakonasana (Reclining Goddess Pose)

This pose helps you to connect to the fertile, creative feminine energy that resides within each of us. As you lay here resting imagine that you are planting seeds of growth within yourself, feel yourself swelling with magic and potential and open your heart to infinite possibilities. Allow yourself to be held and supported fully by the earth, knowing that you are always safe and looked after. Maybe bring one had to your belly and one to your heart and feel the energy and power to manifest within you.

After you finish your practice give deep thanks and invoke grace by bringing your hands together in Anjali Mudra. Feel the inner glow of your own heart, then send this warmth outward and shine your inner light into the world.

Today opens up a three month period of fertile growth (until the autumn equinox in September) in which you can plant seeds and create real change in your life. If you want to really bring all this magic to life you can join me for my incredible Autumn Equinox Goddess retreat in Ibiza in September where we will celebrate all the wonderful things in life and  harvest all of the wonderful things the year has already brought.
